Bronx Business Booming
The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs which comprise New York City, officially called Bronx County. It is a booming city in its own right, with an estimated population of 1,391,903. There are somewhere between 44 and 68 separate neighborhoods in the Bronx, depending on who you ask, each with its own flavor and appeal. There are several major shopping districts aside from local businesses that may pop up in each neighborhood. In Co-op City, the largest housing development in the world is a popular shopping district called Bay Plaza. The Bronx Hub or the Hub-Third Avenue Business Improvement District (B.I.D.) is the true retail heart of the South Bronx. It is known as the Hub because this is the location where four major thoroughfares converge: East 149th Street, Third Avenue, Willis Avenue and Melrose Avenue. The majority of the Hub lies within the Melrose neighborhood, but borders the neighborhood of Mott Haven on the north.
Sometimes the Hub is referred to as “the Broadway of the Bronx” due to its enormous traffic and density of architecture. Spatially the Hub resembles Times Square in Manhattan, due to its triangular “bow-tie” shape created by the convergence of the avenues that intersect into it. The Hub is part of the Bronx Community Board number 1.
The Bronx has a reputation as a place of poverty, one of the poorest in the U.S. However, although it is true that in some neighborhoods there is a large population of poor people, there are other neighborhoods which can be considered affluent, such as Riverdale and Country Club. Almost half of the population is Latino or Hispanic; while about one third are African American. The rest are white, with about 3% Asian and 2% multiracial.
The Bronx is certainly a thriving place with lots of diversity and opportunities for businesses to come together and prosper.
